DEMONSTRATION TO SUPPORT ISRAEL. KHRAMOV: “WHERE ARE RUSSIAN DEMOCRATIC PARTIES AND MOVEMENTS? WHERE ARE JEWISH ORGANIZATIONS?”
2006-07-23
Statement by Nikolay Khramov, Secretary of the Russian Radicals movement
Today’s demonstration at the Israeli Embassy that was organized by Russian Radicals and the Transnational Radical Party to support Israel (and it was the first of the kind in Russia in the 12 days of the war!) numbered up to a hundred of participants. Only some dozen of them were our activists, Radicals. The rest were just Muscovites who learnt about the demonstration from a radio broadcast (many thanks to “The Moscow Echo”) and came to express their solidarity with Israeli people and Israeli democracy. In fact, it was not a Radicals’ demonstration. We have in a sense taken the trouble to organize and offer the people a service that proved to be demanded and in low supply: a chance to attend these days’ demonstration to say things about the Middle East developing that are different from the slightly veiled anti-Israeli propaganda being broadcasted by the Russian TV.
The action has fulfilled its aims, to improve if only by an inch the image of our country and the Russian society in the eyes of all those who see the essence of what is going on these days in the Middle East.
I am grateful to all who came to support our initiative and, at the same time, to seize on our offering, one more of our offerings proving to be useful to people whatever they feel toward us, toward our political activity and program.
I am also grateful to dozens of people from Israel, Russia, America and other places who had the days before today’s demonstration sent their words of support and appreciation via e-mail, ICQ or phone calls.
And I am also grateful to those who abstained today from coming to the Israeli Embassy for one and only “solid” reason: because the demonstration’s organizers were us, the Radicals. Who abstained asking themselves: “Why have not someone else bothered, someone more respectable than those Radicals?” I am chorusing with this question and re-addressing it to those who might and full well could have organized such manifestation of solidarity. Where are you? Where is SPS (Soyuz Pravyks Sil, the Union of the Right Forces), where is OGF (Ob’yedinyonny Grazhdansky Front, the United Civil Front), where is Yabloko (Yavlinsky-Boldyrev-Lukin bloc, the Apple party)? Where are other democratic parties, movements and organizations? Where are human rights activists? Where on Earth are the Jewish organizations?!
Might our today’s action prove to be the first and the last pro-Israeli demonstration in Russia ever?
